Hubert Parry (1848 - 1918), considerato da molti (incluso Edward Elgar) come il miglior compositore inglese dai tempi di Purcell, e come il padre della moderna tradizione inglese, è meglio conosciuto per il suo inno Jerusalem (immortalato dal Women's Institute e dall'English Cricket tifosi allo stesso modo!). Il suo inno "I was glad", scritto per l'incoronazione di Edoardo VII, nel 1902, è stato utilizzato anche alle incoronazioni di Giorgio V, Elisabetta II e Carlo III (che è un fan dichiarato della musica di Parry). Insegnò composizione al Royal College of Music di Londra dal 1883 al 1895, quando successe a Sir George Grove come direttore del College, incarico che mantenne fino alla sua morte. Il suo illustre elenco di allievi includeva Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Frank Bridge e John Ireland. Ispirato inizialmente dai romantici tedeschi Mendelssohn e Schumann, Parry divenne rapidamente un devoto di Brahms e Wagner, le cui influenze possono essere ascoltate in gran parte della sua produzione. Ma, fin dai suoi primi lavori, la sua voce individuale può essere ascoltata molto chiaramente. Commissionato per il Three Choirs Festival, a Gloucester nel 1880, il suo "Scenes from Shelley's Prometheus Unbound" è proprio uno dei primi lavori. La prima ha ricevuto un'accoglienza mista, ma nonostante le numerose repliche, a Cambridge, Oxford e Londra, tutte con recensioni entusiastiche, il pezzo è caduto nell'oscurità. Vernon Handley si è esibito per la BBC Radio 3 nel 1980, in occasione del centenario della prima, ma questa registrazione in prima mondiale è la prima occasione per il pubblico moderno di ascoltare questo lavoro eccezionale.
