I brani contenuti nel classico di Billie Holiday, “Lady Sings the Blues”, provengono da due diverse sessioni di registrazione, una del 1954 e una del 1956. Un altro brano tratto dalla seconda sessione è stato aggiunto come bonus track a questa. Sebbene importanti musicisti siano presenti in entrambe le sessioni di registrazione (Charlie Shavers, Tony Scott, Paul Quinichette e Wynton Kelly in quella del 1956, e Harry "Sweets" Edison, Willie Smith e Barney Kessel in quella del 1954), poco spazio è lasciato per ogni improvvisazione strumentale. Protagonista assoluta è infatti la voce di Billie Holiday.
