Una delle molte stelle del jazz a morire prematuramente, il brillante sassofonista Booker Ervin (1930-1970) morì di disfunzione renale all’età di 39 anni. Questa raccolta presenta, per la prima volta in assoluto in un unico set, tutti gli album di Booker con Horace Parlan in quartetto, quintetto e sestetto. Oltre a questi album, hanno registrato insieme solo come membri del celebre Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. I cinque dischi inclusi qui nella loro interezza (insieme a tutto il materiale esistente delle stesse sessioni) sono “Cookin’” (Savoy Records MG 12154), “That’s It” (Candid CJM-8014), “Up And Down” (Blue Note BST -84.082), “Happy Frame of Mind” (Blue Note BST-84134), e “Exultation” (Prestige PRLP-7293).
