Nina Simone è entrata per la prima volta in studio a New York nel 1957 per registrare il suo album di debutto “Little Girl Blue” (la data di registrazione esatta non è nota) con Jimmy Bond al basso e Albert "Tootie" Heath alla batteria. Dire che il suo debutto in studio fu un successo sarebbe riduttivo. A soli 25 anni, Simone aveva registrato un album in cui si rispecchiava tutta la passione ed esuberanza della sua giovane età, ma anche tutta l'abilità e la grazia di un veterano. L'album divenne subito un classico, ma Simone non registrò più per due anni. Nel 1959 firmò un contratto con l’etichetta newyorkese Colpix Records. Per questa etichetta registrò il suo secondo album, “The Amazing Nina Simone” (Colpix SCP407) con un'orchestra diretta da Bob Mersey. L’album è qui riproposto in vinile colorato viola, con l’aggiunta di cinque brani, di cui quattro che completano le sessioni originali.
